The area that is now known as "Drummer Boy Camping Resort" was occupied by Confederate Infantry (2nd Virginia Infantry--Ewell's II Corps. Johnson's Division) late in the evening of 1 July thru 3 July, 1863, guarding the army of Northern Virginia's left flank. This area was known as "Brinkerhoff Ridge".
Fighting here broke out at daybreak on 2 July as rebel skirmishers from "Walker's Stonewall Brigade" encountered Union skirmishers on the north slope of Wolf's Hill (just to the southwest of the "Drummer Boy" entrance on Hanover Road).
The most significant fighting occurred at about 4pm that same day when the 2nd Virginia Infantry fought dismounted Union Cavalry (Gregg's Division) just off the eastern slope of the present day camping resort.
By dusk on 2 July the fighting in this area came to a close with few casualties.
